DAYBREAKERS is yet another entry to the vampire flick genre which seems to be in for a revival. But this one shall have none of the washboard abs of the Twilight series. However instead we have a solid cast thrown in which includes the likes of Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe and Sam Neill.

The film, made within a modest 22 million budget, already made its debut at the 2009 Toronto Film Festival. However it releases wide on the first week of 2010.


Directed by the Spiereg twins, this film throws the vampire genre into the sci-fi mix for the latest of the vampire vs human saga. Fans to this party would have already got a fair dose with the recent I AM LEGEND and one has to see how exactly this would take it a step higher.

The film is set around 2019 where a plague has resulted in most of the population turning into vampires. However despite blood farming plants, there seem to be blood shortage crisis. Edward (Hawke) a vampire hematologist is hoping to find a blood substitute for the corporation that we works for.

However he gets a breakthrough only when he comes across two fugitive humans (Willem Dafoe, Claudia Karvan). But the last few remaining humans have to fight it out there to survive while Edward seeks to perfect the cure before it becomes too late.

Ethan Hawke comes into a prominent lead role after a long time, but the real shoulders that the movie’s credibility will be on the shoulders of Dafoe and Neill. Their performances are very much the key here.

From the looks of it, this could be one of the more decent of vampire flicks- not exactly one of my fave genres. However the premise looks good, and with the actors on board, this should be a decent watch. Trailer was pretty ok.

Though it arrives during an unfortunate glut of vampire movies, Daybreakers offers enough dark sci-fi thrills -- and enough of a unique twist on the genre -- to satisfy filmgoers. ROTTEN TOMATOES 6/10

The best thing you can say about the movie is that it pours some very old blood into a new plastic bottle. EW C

As the action diminishes, the plot digs into a rut, hobbling toward a climactic showdown that doesn’t feel all that climactic. AV CLUB C +
