Interesting to watch some noted film makers trying to capture headlines with biopics of political personalities still fresh from the TV clippings all around. And even interesting how political forces can put a stop to the creative aspirations of a filmmakers. To each his own, i guess!
First it was Jagmohan Mundra. A film maker with a target audience that still is to be discovered, is out to bring a personality like Sonia Gandhi to the big screen. The director of Provoked, Bawander and other 'socially relevant eye-openers' thinks bringing the story of the young Italian woman and her rise to be the prominent leader of one of the biggest democracy is the kind of film that will atleast help Mundra to shoot to fame, if not Sonia herself. The Congress party instantly realises that it would just end up creating a lot of trouble in a country like India than any good and have therefore gone ahead and slapped a legal notice on the maker thus putting the project on hold.
Then on the other hand the all talk Mahesh Bhatt thinks he did enough of talking, decides to do our Pakistani brothers a favour by bringing their leader Benazir Bhutto to the main screen. To be coproduced with a Pakistani company it was a film that would chronical the life of Bhutto. However this idea has also been shot down, in this case by widower Zardari Bhutto himself. However here things get more interesting....the reason could be just that the life of the slain politician should not be given to the hands of an Indian filmmaker....it could turn dangerous.
Well frankly I think it is not that much of a harm if a certain Bhatt is doing it. Imagine if a Sanjay Gupta or a Anubhav Sinha wanted to make their take on the assasination. Now that would be dangerous!
So no Ash doing a Sonia, no Emraan Hashmi to be cast as Nawas Sharif....damn you politicians!
