Superstar is certainly an acid test. Not only it becomes an important film for lead man Kunal Khemu, it also is equally important for director Rohit Jugraj. While Khemu has shown his acting prowess from time to time, this will be a full fledged masala showcasing the many shades of this young actor. Does Khemu has what it takes to be the Bollywood poster boy?

However it is a hard testing time indeed for the young director Rohit Jugraj. Afterall he is still known for the notorious debut feature James which was a big let down, irrespective of it coming from the Ram Gopal Varma stables. And then a lot happened since then as to who should take the blame. However Jugraj broke free and with Superstar, he hopes to show the industry that he can make movies, with or without a RGV tag. So will Jugraj prove his mettle?

Superstar decides to tell yet another tale of a wannabe actor struggling to make it big in the movie industry. However all that determination have fetched him a chance as an extra and nothing more. Then again he has all that it takes to hit the big league.

Then comes the twist that fate holds. He realizes that a lookalike of his, Karan is making a grand entry into film world thanks to his rich father Mr Saxena. However though Karan has all the money, he is no actor and is just interested in having a gala patry time. And that is where Kunal is roped in as a body double to make up for the non existent talents of the debutant.

Just when Kunal thinks that fate can get any more cruel than this, it just does. For under a drastic turn of events, Kunal is now given a chance to live his dreams. He gets everything that he wishses…except he stand to lose himself and everything that once was his!

rates it

2.5 outta 5

The critics seem to agree that though Khemu does shine through this, but the film fails to justify the talents. Bad writing and screenplay seems to have once again ruined a chances of something that could have been much much more. And thankfully, Jugraj showcases his talents with a few well executed sequences, making this a safe venture for him. No the industry will not be throwing this man out yet!

Go ahead and watch the film for a complete mix of drama , action and songs …audiences will walk out amazed by Kunal’s performance.

SUPER STAR is a decent product, but it could've been notches above the ordinary had it taken care of a few hiccups. IndiaFM 2/5

If you leave the cinema with a heavy heart it's not because the film sucked, no it's because here's a film that could have been so much more.
