Meanwhile Farhan Akthar has now all his eyes on ROCK ON and so is his fans.

The story so far....

Farhan Akhtar's extra special film - Voices From The Sky has found a male lead- Saif Ali Khan.

Saif has confirmed the project on Bollywood Hungama which means Farhan Akhtar and Saif shall reteam once again for yet another special movie just like their Dil Chahta Hai was years back. Afterall it was DCH that shot back Saif to the big league in a big way. And Saif has never look back since....

Back to this project, shooting scheduled to kick off in September.
UPDATE MAY 14: As shocking as it can be, Saif Ali Khan is not to be part of this project anymore. It seems he had demanded a whopping amount of money for the role, which eventually forced Farhan Akhtar to look elsewhere for their male lead.

ROCK ON (Hindi, 2008) getting hotter!!

Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani have launched their next project Rock On.

And with Luke Kenny also on the cast list, expecting Channel V shall be singing only one tune till the release...well who is complaining, just ROCK ON dudes!

The music is slated to release on 7th of July and is certainly expected to be nothing short of a rocking experience! source: Mid-day

Sanjay Gupta hatches THE MASTER PLAN

Sanjay Gupta has decided to repeat his star cast of his upcoming ACID FACTORY. Which means the names like Irrfan Khan, Fardeen, Manoj Bajpai, Aftab and Dino will make a return for a movie titled THE MASTER PLAN.

The movie is a desi version of a 1950 French flick , the name of which is not being revealed by Gupta fearing that someone else might snatch the idea. And surprisingly, Gupta is going about trying to get the rights from the French makers. That should come as a surprise as Gupta is well known for ripping off foreign DVDs but certainly without any rights being secured.

Gupta is now planning this venture to go on the floors by early 2009, after which he will team up with Gulzar saab on PATHAN.

THODA PYAAR THODA MAGIC review

Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Amisha Patel, Shriya Sharma, Ayushi Burman, Rachit Sidana, Akshat Chopra and Rishi Kapoor
directed by Kunal Kohli
music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy
Learning from their disastrous attempts at other genres, Yash Raj Films gets back to wholesome family flicks. And director Kunal Kohli steps up seeming to have the answer to all the woes of the banner. By throwing together a kiddie flick, that has thoda of everything and still seem a fresh package of a rather ol’ wine.

So a thoda of Sound of Music or Mary Poppins never did anyone any harm. Nor will thoda dose of recent flicks like Nanny McPhee or Lemony Snickets. So why not stir it all in the melting pot and bring forth THODA PYAAR THODA MAGIC.

Ranbeer Talwar (Saif Ali) is a pretty successful businessman Saif Ali Khan). Though he has been pretty much the achiever at everything he does from childhood, he has only stood to lose the people he loves. And this loner‘s life takes the plunge when he ends up killing a couple, the Walias, in a road accident.

However the twist is that instead of a prison sentence, the judge hands out a controversial judgement whereby the accused Ranbeer is given the complete responsibility of the four kids of the deceased couple.

However Ranbeer realizes that this is not going to be an easy task especially with the foursome out to seek revenge. Even Ranbeer’s bimbo girlfriend Malaika (Amisha) too ends up failing to win the hearts of the kids

That is when God himself (Rishi Kapoor), dressed in all white, decides that he shall dispatch his angel down to earth to help out the kids. And he finds no better candidate than the bubbly Geeta. (Rani Mukherjee).

Now it is upto Geeta to pose as a nanny and ensure that she completes her task of getting Ranbeer and the kids together!

Director Kohli has made a splendid kiddie flick and is sure to be lapped up by those below 10. And the film has enough to keep the ones accompanying them entertained. The ones in between however are not going to derive the same amount of enjoyment. Barring the ‘Lazy Lamhe’ number, Kohli has ensured it stays rooted in the fantasy realm in which the narration is spinned around. But that one song though eventually is well incorporated, does stand out like a sore thumb. But then being the most popular number from the film, I guess that shall not bother many.

The script and narration is straight forward and nothing exceptional is tried out here. You do not have crass humour or the unwarranted subplots here in the name of Bollywood masala. But then again, that certain charm associated with movies like Mr India and Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke is missing here…the kind that makes these moves a repeat viewing success for viewers of all ages.

What saves the day for the older audiences at the end of day is the acting. Saif Ali Khan plays his part perfectly and shows how much he has evolved as an actor. Saif is certainly at ease here and fits the bill.

Also after crying her heart out in recent outings like Baghban and Laaga Chunari…, Rani Mukherjee is bound to be received with open arms as the bubbly angel who just cannot cry. That in itself is a welcome relief and gives Rani , an extremely powerful performer a chance to chill away with this role. Once again, even Rani makes it look like a cake walk and to top it, like a cherry comes the on screen chemistry between the Hum Tum pair.

But the real life line of this film are the kids and that is where Kunal Kohli has kept his word and not shown the kids as the typically irritating all-too-smart kids that run havoc on the Indian screens. This foursome plays it out as normal kids and therefore connects a lot better with the viewers, especially the boy who plays the role of Iqbal. He walks away with some of the better scenes in the film.

As for a Kohli favourite Rishi Kapoor, he comes out decent enough as God in Jeetu ji’s white attire. But then again he is no Morgan Freeman. Amisha Patel plays the bimbo part perfectly and gets a chance to sizzle away in the Lazy Lamhe song.

Back to the movie, the USP of the flick is its creative screenplay which is aided by some of the finest visual effects witnessed on the Indian screen. Be it the dance in the skies ‘Bulbula’ or the Night at the Museum inspired ‘Beetey Kal Se’, it brings freshness to the song visualization. And what is commendable is the fact that the makers never bragged about it but instead let the magic take over onscreen.

That then brings us to the music department which is extremely strong. To begin with Shankar Ehsaan Loy trio reteams with lyricist Prasoon Joshi to recreate to a great extent the magic they brought to Taare Zameen Par. And that is well followed up by the background score from Sandeep Chowta which is effective despite resorting to Hollywood-ish clichés. And even if you miss all these finer things, you are still sure not to miss some Apple and Dominoes branding in the movie. But you cannot be blamed for missing certain Lucha singh and Sher singh who goes completely missing from the script pages as the film progresses.

This is the kind of movie that has a certain vintage Disney charm and feel to it. And we all know that in these days of bikini clad hot bods and bare chested dancer boys, not much Bollywood movies know what that exactly is. But Kohli seems to prefer sticking to the basics to come up with a sweet and endearing movie. And thankfully, it is low on melodrama too.

So what you waiting for, take those kids and treat them to Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic. This one is for them, and let them enjoy the magic and fantasy.

MoviemagiK rates it 3.5 /5

Amole 's next: Sallu baba and the 40 kids!

Amole Gupta, the man behind Taare Zameen Par, is going full steam and is almost wrapping up the script for his next feature film which too shall be based on children. Amole makes it clear that his movies shall always be dealing with children as that is the only language he knows and he can recognise.
The film is set to have atleast 40 kids this time, and he is certain that he will be able to cast Salman Khan in the film. Surprisingly he has not even spoken to Salman about this, but goes onto clarify that he shall go to Sallu bhai only once the script is completed. And once Salman reads it, there is no way that he will be refused. Such is the confidence the man has in this Khan.
Hope it does not end in the way it did with the earlier Khan that he associated with.

MERE BAAP PEHLE AAP

Cast: Akshaye Khanna, Paresh Rawal, Om Puri, Genelia D Souza, Shobana, Rajpal Yadav and Naserudin Shah
Directed by Priyadarshan
Music by Vidyasagar
Release Date : JUNE 6, 2008

Priyadarshan is teaming up with Shemaroo Films to bring together yet another light hearted family entertainer - Mere Baap Pehle Aap.

The film sees Priyadarshan with the other fave Akshaye - not Kumar but of the Khanna variety. After successful stints with Hungama and Hulchul, Akshaye Khanna gets another role that is sure to win him more fans.

The film, which is a remake of the Malayalam film - Ishtam, sees Akshaye Khanna cast as a responsible son who not only looks after the family business, but also spends more time bailing out his retired father and his father's buddy (Om Puri and Paresh Rawal) out of the various troubles they get into. What the son realises is that the best way to get the dad in line is by hopefully getting him remarried. And when his father meets an old flame of his accidentally, beta realises exactly where to find the solution too!

The film unlike many of Priyadarshan's recent flicks is not a laugh riot, but a light hearted family entertainer with that classy comic touch relying mainly on the father-son chemistry.
THE PANEL ROOM
Priyadarshan seems to be running out of steam and it was expected to happen anytime. The problem is that they expect a certain brand of humour from Priyan and therefore whenver he attempts anything else variably different from what he is known for, then they come down harsh on him. And if he excel in what is expected from him, then again they brand him same ol , same ol. So it puts Priyan's future in a fix.
If you speak only of this latest flick, the critics have called the light hearted flick an inane script, horrible acting, and also exercises of miscasting. Only working in a few bits and pieces, this one seems to be cast away to doom.
On the whole, MERE BAAP PEHLE AAP is enjoyable in parts. At the box-office, it's at best an average fare. Taran Adarsh @Indiafm 2.5/5
The problem with Mere Baap Pehle Aap is its stubborn display of inconsistency. Sukanya Verma @ Rediff.com 2.5/5

THE HAPPENING

THE HAPPENING is yet another movie from the director who gave us SIXTH SENSE. But things have never been as bright as that since those glory days. And now with the last distaster LADY IN THE WATER, Shyamalan's career really requires this one to pull in the audiences.
From the teaser, it looks to be the typcial Shyamalan template all over again and has stuck to his style. But does he have it in him to spook his audiences and take them on a similar trip like he did with his initial Bruce Willis starrers.
THE PANEL ROOM
Talk about getting ripped apart, and that is exactly what the various critics have to say about Shyamalan's latest flick. Most of the critics admit that the thought of watching a Shyamalan movie seems to have a higher fear factor than the movie itself. And with this also being panned by critics, the road ahead for Shyamalan certainly looks dicey.
The Panel Room seems to be in a mood to hand this one a dimsal 1.90 outta 5

PREVIEW THOUGHTS.....
Frankly, the first teaser had me hooked. It gave the kind of mood that we are in for and I was really happy that Manoj NightShyamalan was coming back and once again playing to his strengths which is 'the fear factor of something out there'.

Manoj Night Shyamalan has never repeated the success of The Sixth Sense with any of his following works. But while Unbreakable and Signs did deliver the promises to an extent, the last two films (Village and Lady in the Water) proved too much of a disaster which makes it important for Shyamalan to bounce back.
Will The Happening finally make it happen this time around with Mark Wahlberg stepping into the circle to carry the movie on his shoulders.
Truth be told, the full trailer that surfaced recently makes me think that this movie could go either way. Suddenly not so sure as I feel a lot more negative vibes from this one. Ah, they should have left it at the teasers itself. Atleast for a few months more.

THE INCREDIBLE HULK (2008)

cast: Edward Norton, Liv Tyler, William Hurt, Tim Roth

Directed by Loius Leterrier

Studio: Universal Pictures

For reasons known and unknown the makers now want to distance themselves from the original Eric Bana starrer HULK. But the truth is that it is still very much a sequel to that. Only thing is that they will not throw any reference to that version, and in fact have removed everyone from the cast of that flick.

So the new movie sees Edward Norton take on the role of Bruce Banner. He not only plays the lead, but have also undertaken the role of writing this whole film and reworking the numerous early drafts. This time it is a more WHAM-BAM flick that is out to please the fans if not the critics!

The explosive, action-packed adventure in one of the all-time most popular superhero sagas unfolds with a cure in reach for the world's most primal force of fury: THE INCREDIBLE HULK. We find scientist Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) living in shadows, scouring the planet for an antidote. But the warmongers who dream of abusing his powers won't leave him alone, nor will his need to be with the only woman he has ever loved, Betty Ross (Liv Tyler).

Upon returning to civilization, our brilliant doctor is ruthlessly pursued by The Abomination (Tim Roth)--a nightmarish beast of pure adrenaline and aggression whose powers match The Hulk's own. A fight of comic-book proportions ensues as Banner must call upon the hero within to rescue New York City from total destruction. And on June 13, 2008...one scientist must make an agonizing final choice--accept a peaceful life as Bruce Banner or the creature he could permanently become: THE INCREDIBLE HULK.

The film, beside Norton, also stars Tim Roth as The Abomination, while Liv Tyler takes on the role of Betty Ross. William Hurt is cast as General Thunderbolt Ross. Even rhe Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) puts a cameo in this movie.

This time the film is directed by french talent Louis Leterrier (Transporter and Danny the Dog). I have no idea why the studio insists on getting foreign guys to take on Hulk. Isn't there someone rooted in the American scenario capable of giving justice to this character?

Anyways, The Incredible Hulk is certainly awaited for several reasons. Definitely 2008 is a year full of big movies. But nothing can really get as big as watching Hulk battle it with a beast like The Abomination. It is undoubtedly the battle worthy of your ticket money this summer.
THE PANEL ROOM
The writing seems clear for HULK this time around. It has been given a favourable thumbs up by most by taking the safe action packed routine. So HULK seems to be mindless popcorn flick of the summer that is high on action, low on anything intellectual. Well, exactly what the viewers wanted ...right ?
The Panel room seems to agree on a 3.1 rating for this one....

UPDATE APR 5: You can help yourself to a behind the scenes look at this big summer release where the makers spent some time giving us some more juicy bits of the feel ofthe flick

UPDATE Mar 15: The trailer is finally unleashed , but even more interesting is that director Leterrier decides to guige us frame by frame through the trailer at EMPIRE . Most notable details from them is that there is still patchup works going on with the Hulk CGI. One of the reasons why the trailers were delayed all this while. Secondly, it is going to be a 26 minute long battle that we shall see between the two monsters right in the middle of NYC. Howz that for a climax?

Hmm..more trouble behind studio doors. As the film is making its way to the final cut there seems to be a heated debate between Edward Norton, the director , and the suit troop of Universal and Marvel - More on that HERE

The movie is getting bigger and bigger as the day approaches. So it is rightful that I get prepared for this superhero flick that promises to be of magnanimous proportions.

Many hated Ang Lee's dark look at one of the most popular of comic superheroes ever...The Incredible Hulk. Personally I loved the dark tones but have to agree that the real culprit was the corny special effects that ruined the show.

Bhumika Chawla returns with E NIVAS's next

E. Nivas, director of flicks like SHOOL, DUM and LOVE KE LIYE KUCH BHI KAREGA, is ready with the script of his next project which is said to be a psychological thriller.

Though right now busy with the pre-release rounds of his upcoming DE TAALI, the director is keen on starting off his next project as well and that too with Bhumika Chawla as the leading lady.

Bhumika who has been a well known name in the South industries made a rather big Bollywood splash with Tere Naam. Now the lady last seen in GANDHI MY FATHER has been lying low since her marriage last year.

Well, as for the male.....wait until the release of DE TAALI , and we might have the answer ready by then.

To Copy or to be Right - the Copy Right Saga!!

They always say that the path of the truth, however right, might not always be the easiest. Atleast some film makers are learning it the hard way trying to be right and politically correct about things. Here is a article on how AAMIR almost never got made until the director went and took a clear chit from the makers of CAVANTE, a Filipino movie on similar lines. It also goes on to tell how the makers had to cough up 8 lakhs from the 2 crore project on acquiring the rights to the Peggy Lee song - Its A Good Day.
Also we hear that David Dhawan after making a blockbuster out of the HITCH inspired PARTNERS...now hopes to do the same with yet another Hollywood runaway success story - The Wedding Crashers. However this time Dhawan wants to do this right!
So now here goes more on the copyright issue where some film makers are turning a new leaf trying to do things the right way. However they believe that the process could take a lot longer and it is best to do it the traditional hush-hush way. What say?
Even magazines are not backing out of the copyright issues as we see OK! magazine coming strong on its exclusivety factor and they want to ensure that their work remains exclusive indeed, as we see a case of Shahid Kapur's fansite being hauled up for putting up pics of the star from the OK! Photoshoot. In fact the stars themselves are not given rights to use them.

LUCK (Hindi) : Shruthi Hassan opposite Imran Khan!

cast: Sanjay Dutt, Mithun Chakraborthy, Imran Khan, Shruthi Hassan, Danny, Ravi Kishen, Neha Oberoi, Chitrashi Rawal and Rati Agnihotri
directed by Soham Shah
produced by Ashtavinayak
music by Salim Suleiman

Soham Shah, the man behind the misfire called KAAL is now all set for his next venture, yet another multistarrer titled LUCK.
This time the film is produced by Ashtavinayak and has kicked off at Goa. The film will bring together Sanjay Dutt, Danny, Mithun and the new kid on the block, Imraan Khan. Obviously, there are some female members too in the likes of Neha Oberoi and Chitrashi Rawal (of Chak De fame). They are also on the hunt for a lady opposite Imraan.
Now obviously it would be a great treat when biggies like Mithun dada and Sanju baba get together on one screen. So definitely that will be the selling factor to this movie, (that is if Soham Shah fails to deliver with the script like the last time around).
UPDATE JUN 9: The latest buzz is that a leading lady has been zeroed in...and it is none other than Shruthi, the daughter of Kamal Hassan. So if she is the lucky one making the debut opposite Imraan Khan it shall be a nice match. For at one end, Aamir Khan the perfectionist might get involved and be suggesting script changes, while at the other corner Kamal Hassan will be keeping a close watch on how Shruthi's debut is shaping up.
Hmm, now with all these big names, Soham Shah looks to have a biggie on hand..now all he needs is LUCK!

X FILES 2: I WANT TO BELIEVE

THE PINK PANTHER 2

One more from the Pink Panther house. The first one failed to really get the laugh going, but the makers think they can always pose to be a success story.
So here is a AD for the sequel PINK PANTHER 2 ...don't worry..not until 2009.

However the movie did make a lot of buzz on Asian shores...for it features Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai as one of the leading ladies.

Trailer Zone: MADAGASCAR 2 : new promo

Prakash Jha's next RAJNITI

cast: Ranbir Kapoor
directed by Prakash Jha

It still seems the easiest thing to do - mix modern day politics with age old Mahabharat. It fits in perfectly, and so why not?

Praksha Jha shall be doing precisely that in his upcoming political drama RAJNITI. However to make the flick as interesting as possible, he has roped in a set of big names that includes Ajay Devgan, Nana Patekar, Manoj Bajpai. Even Vivek manages to find a place among these talented names.

Ajay Devgan is reported to be playing a modern day Karna while Nana saab shall play a version of Krishna. A slot for a Arjun version is also yet to be filled.
Hmm, while directors left and right are trying to do the real stuff, the project simply never takes off due to the budget invovled in bringing the mythology to screen. On the other hand, here are some who takes a smarter move by pitting the stories into modern day narration!
UPDATE MAY 13,08 : Vivek Oberoi is out of the project owing to no dates on the diary. source: IndiaFM
UPDATE JUNE 07, 08 Funny these media is...till yesterday it was a multistarrer flick. Today, with Ranbir Kapoor stepping in as lead man...it has now become a Ranbir Kapoor starrer. Ranbir Kapoor shall be playing the role of the son of a powerful political dynasty who is forced to return home and take over the political empire in Delhi. This Rajiv Gandhi meets Hindu mythology will see Ranbir in a different role and also has two leading ladies cast opposite him, one desi and one videsi. source: Mumbai mirror

CONTRACT : Who wants to sign up?

CONTRACT
directed by Ram Gopal Varma
After revisiting the SARKAR lanes with a sequel, Ram Gopal Varma looks to be trying to gain a foothold back in the industry.
And one of the aces up his sleeve for that task seems to be his upcoming movie CONTRACT.
The movie seems to the be the final of his trilogy set that saw underworld movies like SATYA and COMPANY, both of them masterpieces in Indian cinema.
CONTRACT is yet another movie that is focused on Ramu's fave territory - the underworld. However this time it also takes in a slice of international terrorism too somewhere in there all.
Basically the movie is said to be the story of the gang wars that fuelled between Chota Rajan and Dawood Ibrahim.
After Rajan being gunned down at Bangkok, he was rescued and whisked away to safety by the Indian intelligence and deliberately given a free run to oppose the might of Dawood. It is esentially this battle between the two gangs that the movie essentially portrays. If you remember, Ramu's COMPANY also dealt with the early days of these gang wars culminating in a Bangkok episode.
The movie comprises a bunch of newcomers and with it, Ramu is expecting to make the same kind of impact he made ten years ago with SATYA. This one features Adhvik Mahajan, Sakshi Gultai, Amruta Khanvilkar among many others.
The latest buzz is that the film also stars one brand name...Malika Sherawat. Though the makers are hush hush about it, it seems Sherawat madam is a suprise element of the movie.

PHOONK: RGV wants to scare you...again!

Ram Gopal Varma is not past his spooky days...so here is one more from the man that brought you RAAT, BHOOT and AAG...(oh wait, the last one being the scariest!)

Presenting you the teaser of PHOONK...a black magic story! (followed by the music of Black magic Woman)

directed by Shona Urvashi
Release date: SEP 12, 2008

Warner Bros presents SAAS BAHU AUR SENSEX (SBS) which is a production of PLA Entertainment Pvt LTd, a banner that brought many classic comedies of yesteryears that includes titles like CHASHME BADDOOR, JALWA, HERO HIRALAL and recently CHUP KE SE. SAAS BAHU AUR SENSEX also looks all set to join the ranks of these light hearted comedies, and this one is directed by Shona Urvashi.

It is a comedy about the changing times of Indian economies and how a bunch of Indian housewives decide to take a plunge into the world of stock markets.

The film stars Tanushree Dutta, Masumeh Makhija along with powerhouse talents like Kiron Kher, Farooq Sheikh and Lillete Dubey. However the film has already hit headlines thanks to the spat between Tanushree and the director. Probably the film will be remembered for the right reasons though!

This will be the first movie that Warner Bros shall be distributing in India. With this small budget flick, they will be surely testing the waters before unleashing their big budget project CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA.

SARKAR RAAJ : MoviemagiK REVIEWS

cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai , Tanisha Mukherjee

Directed by Ram Gopal Verma

release date: JUNE 06, 2008

When you see the Balaji Films banner flash, you know some fears pop up. And with SARKAR RAJ I have to admit that most of my fears did come true. After all the setting was just right...it is a sequel, so you have some basic characters already well established. For now it was just a matter of Ram Gopal Verma filling up the template that he once successfully created.

Hence SARKAR RAJ does what every sequels does...recreate the atmosphere of the original, play around with the characters from the original, introduce fresh characters into it like those Balaji teleserials, get some out, bring some more in...and the game goes on. And it could not get any better, if the game is one of politics.

We join the Nagre family where we left off....Sarkar (Amitabh Bachchan) still is the supremo but the man who is really running the show is his son Shankar Nagre (Abhishek). And together they keep the Sarkar name running.

To this perfect scenario comes a multinational company who wants to start a plant in rural Maharashtra. Though senior Nagre is not happy with the proposal of the company's CEO Anita Ranjan (Aishwarya), the beta Nagre thinks otherwise. He sees the potential of such a project and knows how benefical it is in the long run.

So Shankar convinces the Sarkar household, and then goes on to educate the villagers with Anita in tow. However things are not so straightforward...as the plant suddenly becomes the object of attention. Political forces all emerge from all corners, both high and low, for a share...and the intentions are not always like what they seem to the eye.

But fighting all setbacks, beta Shankar is all fired up on making this project a reality and will go travel the distance to make this a possibility. However....

Yes , last time the media was certain that this is about the Thakereys. But eventually inspite of the Bachchan character of Subash Nagre being a Bal Thakerey ripoff, the film was essentially what Ram Gopal set out to do - a desi Godfather. Though this time Ram Gopal Verma wants to prove that he still got it in him. And so he ensures that this is not an extension of any Godfather series. Hence RGV sticks to politics this time. However he takes on Indian politics big time.

But what Ram Gopal Verma really presents here is not just any family of power. A detailed look and we know the inspirations are the ruling family of India itself. While many of the audiences might just lap it up at face value...(.that is the Bachchan household redefining the term 'family drama'), there are still a lot that will instantly recognise that the history books are being thrown at their faces. In fact RGV also tries to touch at some controversial 'conspiracy theories'of the partition era without getting into any major trouble. Smart.... And eventually Sarkar Raj saga does leave us with an update of the current political scenario...an outsider lady taking over the reigns of power, while a grandson is being prepared to carry forth the dynasty.

But this is the Nehra dynasty with a Mumbaiyya touch, all jumbled and mumbled into the Sarkar template that I spoke about earlier. Caricatures of villains that fail to really bring about a sense of grave danger to the proceedings. Though characters played out by Govinda Namdeo, Sayaji Shinde, Upendra Limaye all start out strong, in the end they are just sidenotes in this enterprise.

Aishwarya Rai was just a shameless add on. The whole Anita-Shankar track seems terribly forced. Obviously if it was not for the real life references that Ram Gopal Verma was trying to make, this was a character that could have been done away with. To start with she is hardly the woman of substance that all the pre-publicity hype was making her character to be. Surely Ramu, there is more to such a woman than just a shirt unbuttoned look. However Aishwarya's character of Anita hardly had anything substantial about her and is disappointing when you consider her impressive outing in Jodhaa Akbar.

Abhishek Bachchan continues from where he left off last time. His eyes still breath fire, and the man delivers in his rather cold approach to the proceedings. However while he stole the show the first time around, it is Amitabh who gets the better cup in this trip. Eventually the senior Bachchan tries to redeem the legendary tag of his from a debacle like AAG in a big way. And RGV makes up in a sense for the loud Babban with this calmer Subash Nagre. The film again shows why Amitabh Bachchan is a class actor!

Also one must say how impressive the new find of the RGV stable is ...Rajesh Shringarpure. With just a few scenes, he creates an impact that was certainly missing with Kay Kay not being there this time around. But unfortunately his character fails to live up to its potentiality. So expect a similar fate to that of Kay Kay's.

Technically you know that a Ram Gopal Varma movie has a different look and feel to it. Though at one time it was cutting edge advancement, the same cannot be told these days with everyone catching up. However RGV still retains his stamp...be it on the music, the screenplay, the angles, the feel. Yet one cannot help feeling how over indulgent he gets with these mediums. He lets Amar Mohile go wild with his ear scorching background score, while Amit Roy seems to be a lot excited getting to toy his camera. There is a lot of that in-your-face approach, that you wonder if the aim of the game is to count the wrinkles on the stars faces. Some of the key moments definitely could have done away with that. But Ramu thinks every part of an actor's body has a say in acting...right upto the nostrils. Editing is also a mixed bag. At times it looks top of the notch while at times it gets shoddy and RGV maintains the lethargic pace of the original. Oh yes, this is a sequel, remember?

Irrespective of all that, this is still one of the finer attempts from Ram Gopal Varma in a long time. However it would be going overboard if I claim that RGV is back in a grand way. Because at the end of the day, for some one like Ram Gopal Varma this is just one of those exercise routines where he got more things right than wrongs. But never does it ever pose a threat to the list of his materpieces. For we all know that RGV is a director capable of much more.

With Sarkar Raj what he manages essentialy is to maintain the solid punch and feel that he delivered the first time around. Thus in that RGV can sigh a relief. Yet it is obvious that this one deserve a trilogy style follow up to wrap things up. This is one that RGV can easily pick up and take the series for a third go.

But for the time being, here is a rather pleasing and fitting sequel that ties up to the original in a much better way than the namesake Bollywood sequels of these days do! And as for Ramu, after all those holidays, I think with Sarkar Raj, he is definitely back at work!

MoviemagiK gives it a 3 outta 5
THE PANEL ROOM
Well, getting the usual suspects together to see their verdict on the RGV sequel...it seems that though they haven't not ripped it apart like they usually do...most of them still ain't impressed with this one. And once again Taran as most of the film's this year, loved the flick. All in all, we find this SARKAR RAJ ending up at halfway point with a 2.6/5
SARKAR RAJ supersedes the prequel and most importantly, RGV bounces back like never before. An outstanding film in all respects - Taran Adarsh 4/5
comeback may be a strong term. The film still marks Ramu returning gradually to his roots. Mayank Shankar 3/5
Sarkar Raj is recommended only for those in need of a depression pill. Khalid Mohammed 2/5
This is a watchable, entirely forgettable film, and fans of the original are advised to rewatch that one again. RajaSen 2/5
an average rating for Ram Gopal Varma's Sarkar Raj, it's a disappointing follow up to a very good film. Rajeev Masand 2/5

KUNG FU PANDA : e-valuate

cast: Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu, Seth Rogen and Ian McShane
Directed by John Stevenson, Mark Osborne
Studio DREAMWORKS ANIMATION

Dreamworks Pictures is back at it...getting a bunch of top grade A list celebrities and getting them to voice them an animation flick. So if the visuals and content does not drag in the crowds, the voice list should ?

This time doing the main role of Kung Fu Panda is Jack Black. And with him doing the voice for the main character, things are hardly going to go wrong. For we all know that Black plays all his characters like a cartoon...so it was only fitting for him to star in his own cartoon. Ofcourse in the guise of a panda, that is!

But the billing does not stop there...you also have names like Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu, Seth Rogen all roped in to give the sizzle. And then ofcourse the main ones...Dustin Hoffman as the kung fu master while Ian McShane as the villainous snow leapord.

A clumsy panda bear becomes an unlikely kung fu hero when a treacherous enemy spreads chaos throughout the countryside in this animated martial arts adventure. On the surface, Po (Jack Black) may look like just another portly panda bear, but beneath his fur he bears the mark of the chosen one. By day, Po works faithfully in his family's noodle shop, but by night he dreams of becoming a true master of the martial arts. Now an ancient prophecy has come to pass, and Po realizes that he is the only one who can save his people from certain destruction.

With time running short and malevolent snow leopard Tai Lung (Ian McShane ) closing in, Furious Five legends Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Crane (David Cross ), Mantis (Seth Rogen), Viper (Lucy Liu), Monkey (Jackie Chan), and their wise sensei, Master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman), all draw on their vast knowledge of fighting skills in order to transform a lumbering panda bear into a lethal fighting machine. Now, if the noble Po can master the martial arts and somehow transform his greatest weaknesses into his greatest strengths, he will fulfill his destiny as the hero who saved his people during their darkest hour.

THE PANEL ROOM

So no, it is not the classic animation flick and Dreamworks still has a long way to go before they reach the Pixar heights. But they have a way of churning out these crowdpleasing star studded animation and it seems this Jack Black comedy does have everything Fun-damentally going correct. So expect another successful franchise in the making and a lot of panda merchandises. A cumulative rating of 6.7/10 for this martial art comedy.

Everything about Kung Fu Panda is a little better, a little sharper, a little funnier than the animated run of the mill. It’s one of the few comedies of 2008 in any style or genre that knows what it’s doing. CHICAGO TRIBUNE 3.5/4

This is a solid family film material, although one suspects the children will get a little more out of it than their parents. REELVIEWS 3/4

It is a perfect family picture; one which grownups can send their kids in solo, fully loaded with popcorn etc, and then hide in the back row to enjoy it themselves. CRANKYCRITIC 7/10

The result is just a middling entry in the animated kidflick stable, which in spite of starring another lovably roly-poly hero is certainly no Shrek. ONEGUYSOPINION C

Though occasionally visually inventive, Kung Fu Panda is a disappointment when it comes to matters of simple black and white: the script. USATODAY 2/4

AAMIR: E-Valuate

cast: Rajeev Khandelwal

directed by RajKumar Gupta

During a time when big banners splash their name and films all over, star sons make those over hype debuts, and stars end up increasing the pay cheque by getting onto the TV tube.

And then there is the reverse swing...a Tv star who left it for the lack of creativity steps into the big world of Bollywood cinema. And also we have a debut director, a fresh cinematographer and even first timers doing the music. And this bunch of promising freshness steps in and takes a path different from the traditional beaten track.

AAMIR tells the story of Dr Aamir who lands up in Mumbai airport from a foreign trip only to be disappointed that his family has not turned up to welcome him. Soon everything begins to go wrong for Aamir with his luggage gone missing, and now he ending up with a cellphone that gets handed over to him by strangers. Now the man has to save his family, following the instructions handed over by the voice at the other end of the phone.

The voice ends up taking our protoganist to the deepest alleys of the Mumbai underbelly.

TV actor Rajeev Khandelwal, most famous for his KAHIN TO HOGA turn as Sujal, makes his big screen debut here with a definite aim to dump off his romantic tag. And the man running the show is director Rajkumar Gupta, who assisted Anurag Kashyap during NO SMOKING. The film is produced by Vikas Behl before UTV picked it up knowing its potential.

Interesting to note that this product was filmed with hidden cameras rather than normal cameras and that too within a span of 30 days. In fact, the director was giving instructions to the Rajeev through the cell. In fact sometimes Rajeev Khandelwal had to do most of the things on his own instincts, and thusu he has also been accredited as the First Assistant director.

And now the movie is already going on to win praises from all screenings so far. However it is yet to be seen will the makers actually reap dividends with this effort. But the question remains how smart a move it was to pit this against a powerhouse product like SARKAR RAJ. Because both are vying for the same audiences at the end of the day.

THE PANEL ROOM

It is definitely glowing reviews from everywhere so far. Those who managed to catch the film seems to be in love with this one and definitely it is a big plus factor for the team of AAMIR.
