PONGAL RELEASES 2008

Pongal is here and with it the Tamil Film Industry has a lot to watch out for.
The big movies are all gearing up for releases, each trying to hit the jackpot.

So what are the films on offer for 2008.

BHEEMA
cast: Vikram, Trisha, Raghuvaran, Prakash Raj and Aashish Vidhyarthi
direction: Linguisamy
Music: Harris Jayaraj
Produced by AM RATHNAM

After his MAJAA, for nearly two years Vikram has had no release. So just for the curiosity factor expect the Tamil audienes to lap this up instantly on release. Vikram afterall is too good an actor to be kept away from the circuit.

However this film has been facing constant shooting delays, post production woes and even court battles. Going grossly overbudget, it is important that the film bears fruit for the makers as too much time and money of everyone involved has gone into the movie. So the real question, is will the movie as fresh as it needs to be, being in the making for such long time.

Vikram plays a gang member going by the code name BHEEMA while Trisha plays a college girl who falls for this gang member. THe supporting cast boasts the usuals like Ashish Vidhyarthi, Raghuvaran and Prakash Raj.

However one thing that is really going in its favor is the music by Harris Jayaraj. It has really impressed the listeners and is already yet another successful Vikram-Jayaraj combinations after flicks like SAAMY, ANNIYAN etc.

Surely the movie to watch out for on PONGAL Day.

PIRAVUM SANDHIPUM
cast: Cheran

The hit successful AUTOGRAPH pair of Cheran and Sneha come together this Pongal for Piravum Sandhipum.

A family tale that is set in the backdrop of the Nagarathar community depicts their joint family household. Looks like a senstive family subject that looks to take over the audience market that BHEEMA might not have- family audiences.

KAALAI
Cast: Silambarasan, Vedhika

Direction: Tarun Gopi
Music: GV Prakash

So self proclaimed Little Super star Silambaran aka Simbu is still trying to make a mark at the boxoffice. For some reason, Kaalai seems to be promising enough to give him a kind of relief at the box office. Atleast this time he tries to take on the angry young man with more maturity and hopefully something good might come out of this for the man.

Directed by Tharun Gopi and with Vedhika roped in as the heroine for this flick, this film seems to have shaped up well. However is Simbu big enough to take on the might of Vikram? I guess not, unless this movie turns out to be something senstational.

VAZHTUKAL
cast: Madhavan. Bhavana

direction: Seeman
Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja

So while Bheema and Kaalia take on each other in the action flick genre, the family audiences have one more option in the form of Madhavan starrer VAZHTUKAL.

The film brings together Madhavan and Bhavana and has the makings of a pretty good family flick. Add to that music from Yuvan Shankar Raja and it looks like it is a worthy mix of elements to work at the BO.

From what director Seeman has to provide us, it sets to be another one 'about loving your parents'.

PAZHANI
Cast :Bharath
Directed by Perarasu

Bharath tries to redo his image with his Pongal release Pazhani with this action flick. Kajal Agarwal plays the lead lady while the supporting cast boasts of names like Kushboo, Biju Menon, Aishwarya among others.

Directed by Perarasu this film might just end up being the darkhorse of the Pongal. As you know Bharath has a way about those things.

PIDICHIRIKAKU
cast: Ashok, Visaka
Directed by Kanagu

Big festival, big names....and then you have this small flick. Very much earnest in its approach, here is a love story without the usual filmi airs. Trying to give you the 'next door love stories' , director Kanagu promises that this one will deliver.

So the race is on and the producers will have sleepless nights as the festival arrives!

Wishing all of you a HAPPY PONGAL 2008
