The story begins from where the Chola Dynasty supposedly ends. It is believed that when the Cholas were thrown out by the Pandiyas, the prince disappeared to some secret location. He also managed to steal a priceless statue of the Pandiyas while doing so. All attempts to trace it have ended futile.

When a well known archaeologist (Prathap Pothen) goes missing, the Government appoints a new team led by Anitha (Reema) to track him down. The team comprises of many includes a military officer (Azhagaperumal) and Lavanya, the daughter of the missing archeologist. The team is also accompanied by a coolie gang led by a boorish Muthu (Karthi).

Their search eventually takes them to the lost city and the one man who they believed was lost in the pages of history – the royal blood in exile (Parthipan). However that just seem the beginning of several unanswered questions

Aayirathil Oruvan is a brave attempt at trying to come out with something new in the placid world of Tamil cinema. . SIFY
