Prakash Raj produces under his home banner Duet Films, the remake of one of the most successful and novel malayalam film in recent times - Udayananu Tharam. This version, Vellithirai, sees the directorial debut of script writer Viji.
Prakash Raj takes on the role of the scheming star played by Sreenivasan while Prithvi Raj tries to step into Mohanlal's shoes. So will this look at the film world click with the Tamil audiences who like their celluloid fantasies intact and would not like to mix it up with reality!
The film tells the story of two room maters Saravanan (Prithviraj) and Kannayan (Prakash Raj). Both have big dreams to accomplish in the movie industry but all doors seem closed upon them. While Saravanan goes around struggling on the big script that would give him his directorial break, Kannayan thinks he has all that is required to become the next big actor in tinsel town.
However in a twist of fate, Kannayan realises that Saravanan's script do have the potential and steals it and presents it to a big time producer on the deal that he has to be the lead actor. Saravanan meanwhile do the rounds with his script realises that it is being produced already by Kannayan, who now is christened Dileep Kanth.
On the personal front, Saravan also stands to lose his love interest Mythili (Gopika) who is a successful actress but is seen nothing more than a golden goose by her family members. With no other option, Saravan marries Mythili but with shattered to know that Kannayan is making a fortune from his dream script. A depressed Saravan looks at other professions while burying the dream of a film maker.
Soon we find Mythili too leaving Saravanan as she realises that she is the reason why her husband is leading a compromised life. On the other hand Kannayan aka Dileep kanth rises to super stardom and manages to get more offers and projects.
It is producer who comes back giving Saravanan an offer to make a film. However to ensure its market value, it must star his arch rival Kannayan. Saravanan knowing how much the film would mean to him, lets go off his ego to cast Kannayan. But Kannayan knowing that Saravanan would not be exactly friendly, decide to bully him with his star power. He makes changes to scripts, dictate terms on the sets and even walks out of the project even before the climax is filmed.
Now a desperate Saravanan decides to give back the star a taste of his own medicine by going ahead and filming the climax -with or without the star!
THE PANEL ROOM
Like all malayalam remakes, this one too looks like one that might fail in comparison to the original. The most important one being the character of a overnight superstar which was a rather comical one in the original, taking a more filmi villain shades in this version.
the film has been a replica of Malayalam version ‘Udhayananu Tharam’ and so there is nothing you can appreciate about the director’s cut in the flick - Cinefundas
Overall the movie is a hilarious and honest critique on some shades of the tinsel town.Worth watching. - Indiaglitz
On the whole Vellithira is not a faithful remake and therein lies its pitfalls, but at the same time it is a breezy fun movie - SIFY
