NEW RELEASE: One Two Three (Hindi, 2008)

Cast: Tushar Kapoor, Suniel Shetty, Upen Patel, Paresh Rawal, Sameera Reddy, Eesha Deol, Tanishaa

Directed by Ashwini Dheer

Music : Raghav Sachar

Release Date: MARCH 28, 2008

Everything for the perfect senseless comic caper comes together for Ashiwani Dheer's debut feature film.

A plot that sounds like a messy comedy of errors is what the movie boasts of.

The story is basically about three Laxmi Narayans who all end up at the same place and get in the way of each other's path. The confusion and misconception that follows is what basically the film is all about.

Tusshar Kapoor, the first of the Laxmi Narayan is a wannabe hitman, and in pursuit of his target comes to the Hotel. The second Laxmi Narayan is the 'yes boss' man who has come to town to pick up his boss' latest car. The third Laxmi Narayan is into the 'lingerie' business and also lands in town to pick up some latest designer samples.

The envelopes left for the three Laxmi Narayans gets mixed up and each ends going about doing the task of others. So throw in the designer girl Jiya (Eesha Deol), the automobile saleslady (Sameera Reddy), a cop in pursuit of the don (Neetu Chandra).

In all this commotion there is the main plot, that of the ten crore worth diamonds that falls into the hands of a young couple (Upen Patel and Tanishaa) who ends up hiding it in one of the cars in the automobile showroom. And we have the Don and his henchmen trying to retrieve the loot.

Tv writer Ashwini Dheer now ventures into big bad world of cinema with a plot that looks like even a TV comedy reject. And with Paresh Rawal and the undergarment sub-plot, you can expect a lot of toilet humour going to be flushed down our way.

This one is also produced by Kumar Rangat, which explains how Tushhar and Eesha cameo-d their way into his earlier flick Sunday which bit the dust at the BO.

Tusshar Kapoor still needs to prove why he is in Bollywood while Suniel Shetty needs to be reminded that he is an actor. All these significant roles in multistarrers are not taking him anywhere. And with a talent like Paresh Rawal being in this, my guess is that a lot of money. All the ladies anyways have nothing in their diaries and to-do lists, so they can happily run through the reels inspite of having no comic talents whatsoever. So Upen Patel...here is your chance to steal the thunder! Ya,right!

Anyways, the only reason why this film was making any news was the cat fights that broke out between the leading women of the film. Probably if they put in some of those cat fights on video, probably it might help the buzz....what say!
PANEL ROOM
The movie did a good thing by getting out of the way of RACE. But does a week later mean anything for this movie in terms of success. Not exactly if the early reviews are anything....the film looks to be an absolute piece of forgettable trash!
Dhir has worked hard on wit-laden dialogues and individualistic sequences, but how one wishes he would've worked on presenting a tighter script. BOLLYWOODHUNGAMA

Hrtihik's KRAZZY 4 PROMO

Hmm..one word to descrbe the new promo that had Hrithik doing his bit...disappointing!

Ganesh Acharya fails to sizzle things up despite having someone as talented as Hrithik on hands. What could have been a blast to the next level, fails miserably.

Trailer Zone: HANCOCK

It is summer and here is Will Smith doing some fun stuff after going a lot dramatic in recent times.
However not so impressed with what is on show, especially the cheesy graphics!

This Friday: SUPERHERO MOVIE

Cast: Drake Bell, Leslie Nielsen, Leslie Paxton, Christopher McDonald, Marion Ross, Brent Spiner
Directed by Craig Mazin
release date: March 28, 2008

Here we go again...yet another movie spoof. But the question is has Hollywood lost the knack of creating spoofs the way they used to be. I mean I was one who enjoyed flicks like Naked Gun, Airplane!, Hot Shots, Robin Hood:Men In Tights etc...but ever since Scary Movie hit town, things have never been the same.

Not only has it been bad, the result has been disastrous....much like the recent Meet The Spartans. Need I say more.

That is precisely why I am still likely to give the benefit of doubt to someone like David Zucker who now is the producer of this latest spoof - creatively titled Superhero Movie...since it is a spoof on superheroes!

The only question is ...will it make people laugh without looking too silly?

After being bitten by a genetically altered dragonfly, high school loser Rick Riker develop superhuman abilities like incredible strength and armored skin. Rick decides to use his new powers for good and becomes a costumed crime fighter known as “The Dragonfly”. However, standing in the way of his destiny is the villainous Lou Landers. After an experiment gone wrong, Lou develops the power to steal a person’s life force and in a dastardly quest for immortality becomes the supervillain, “The Hourglass.”

With unimaginable strength, unbelievable speed and deeply uncomfortable tights, will the Dragonfly be able to stop the sands of The Hourglass and save the world? More importantly, will we stop laughing long enough to notice?

On one hand, I really wish this is one of the movie that make me wanna get back to appreciating spoof movies ...however the poster is again the same ol'crap that wanna make me doubt the intent of the makers!

MoviemagiK reviews ENCHANTED

Cast: Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden, Timothy Spall, Susan Sarandon
Directed by Kevin Lima
Music by Alan Menken
Studio: Walt Disney
Release date: November 21, 2007
Comedy/ Musical/ part animation/ family

Disney has always known for the fairy tale world that it brought into our homes. That was until the CG took over. But until then, it was good ol' animation that provided us the Disney share of magic. So it seems that Disney finally came to terms that if the other studios are minting money at Disney's expense, why not they too benefit from the very same thing.

So kudos to Disney for finding that bone of humour which enabled them to give life to this creative concept that successfully has been executed into a feel good animation/live action hybrid experience.

The films opens in animation giving us the essential fairytale characters. A true Disney maiden Giselle, the charming prince Edward, the wicked step mother Queen Narissa and a whole lot of animal support, most notably the chipmunk .

Thanks to the evil step mother, Giselle is denied her chance of getting married to her prince, as the Queen throws her down a well which takes her directly to a portal that spits her out into the real world - New York city.

Giselle is surprised at a world different from her and how she does not fit into this setting. But that does not bog her down and instead she spreads her infections chirpiness all around her. Even it begins to affect the divorce lawyer who believes he made a mistake by being the good samaritan and letting this stranger under his roof, though it was on the insistence of his daughter who takes a fancy for fairy.

Meanwhile her Prince charming too lands up in search of the princess while the evil forces do everything in their power to keep them lovers from uniting!

Amy Adams did not impress me instantly as she turns from her animated version into a modern day princess. But as the movie progresses, Amy Adams exudes enough charm of the syrupy kind that eventually make us root for her. James Marsden on the other hand looks every bit of the goofy prince charming and was a delight throughout. Susan Sarandon impresses as the animated Queen Narissa but is about average once she comes to the real world. However Patrick Dempsey is forced to keep a straight face while everyone around him is having their share of fun.

All the fun I had was rather ruined thanks to a climax that was just a bit too much but might be probably enjoyed by the younger lot. However the plus factor is the songs that does bring a lot of magic back on screen. The park song and dance routine have been well executed and a nice throwback to the musicals.

This is one of those few really good 'fun for all' family kind of flicks out there in recent times. And just when we thought that Disney has lost that magic touch that they used to possess in making such family classics, they reassure that they still have some enchanting tricks up their sleeve. The Mouse and his wizardy shall live on!

Summer line up for Malayalam movies

The industry is once again going through a bad phase. And with the line up of movies that is coming up in the next two months, there is certainly a lack of any blockbuster material. Only Lal Jose's Mulla looks like a potential, while Lal is playing safe with a Sathyan Anthikad family affair for Vishu. Mammooty too will come up with a slapstick comedy Annan Thampi which is certain to have nothing new onboard.

In short, nothing much to look forward to this festive season. That means nothing major till Onam...shucks!

MEMORABLE HOOKERS ON SCREEN

And for those who can do without bodyguards, maybe you can go ahead and check out the most memorable of all those hookers that have graced the screens...yeah, the guys are in here as well.
Go on, check it out...I ain't telling no one!
Yeah, it is Hollywood folks because I am sure world cinema have put together more memorable hookers!

TOP BODYGUARD FLICKS

This week's release Drillbit Taylor is certainly not making into any TOP list, but it is enough to get people take a look into those classic Bodyguard moments....

And EW has gone ahead and given us the list of top Bodyguard flicks....CHECK IT OUT.

Any more additions to this, guys ?

THE LOW DWELLER Page: Script goes for 1.1 million!!

This is the kind of stuff that makes dreams.

Last week Brad Ingelsby was just another 27 year old , today he is a millionaire as his script 'The Low Dweller' have been bagged for 1.1 million bucks in a bidwar that saw almost five different studios competing. A first time writers'script that sparks such an interest ?

And now the film is set to have Ridley Scott directing while Leonardo Di Caprio stars.

The story is set in 1986 and tells about Slim who is just released from prison after serving punishment for a murder. Now when he looks to start things afresh, he discovers that his younger brother has been murdered, Slim seems to have no choice but to avenge his brother's death!

From the studio point of view, the biggest USP is that this is a film that can be shot in pretty quick time, and with the SAG strikes looming large, this is the best way out!

THE WOLFMAN page

UPDATED March 21: Makeup expert Rick Baker shares his side of the story in bringing the fame Wolfman to the bigscreen. You may check the interview at EW

Mark Romanek left the movie all of a sudden, but the project Wolfman is still very much on. Now that the studioUniversal has got a stand-in director Joe Johnston (Jurrasic Park3, Jumanji), we get back to the casting news.

The film is a remake of the 1941 horror movie classic that brought the character of Wolfman to the screens. It tells the tale of Lawrence Talbot who on getting bitten by a wolf soons finds that he is cursed for the one he got bitten was no ordinary wolf, but a werewolf which carries the age-old curse making Talbot turn into a beast with a lust for murder.

The film certainly has a list of some potential actors that makes a movie look a lot more interesting than the cheesy title.
Benecio del Toro stars in the lead role while Anthony Hopkins has been cast as his father. If that is not news enough, now Hugo Weaving too has been weaved in to play the role of detective Aberline. Now that should be good news for Weaving means the project should bring in big bucks. So Wolverine is indeed a welcome addition to Weavings' list that includes Matrix trilogy, LOTR triloy, Happy Feet, V for Vendetta and even last summer's Transformers!

MoviemagiK reviews 27 DRESSES (2008)

Cast: Katherine Heigl, James Marsden, Edward Burns and Marin Akerman
Directed by Anne Fletcher
Studio 20th Century Fox
Release date: Jan 18,2008

27 Dresses is not just another chic flick but one of the few successful ones. It is a romantic comedy that instantly catapults Katherine Heigl into the big league. If last year she had to share the honours of Knocked Up with her co stars and the Appatow clan, this year she already proves that she has what it takes by being the USP for this movie to stay strong all this while.
How else can you justify the way this Heigl centric film has performed at the box office despite having all the cliches intact. Trust me, had it been anyone else, things would have turned out a lot different from the present state of affairs.

Jane Nichols (Heigl) loves taking care of people and being there for them. That explains why she has been spending her weekends playing bridesmaid to several ladies, and later saving the dresses all up in her closet. But that is not what she actually does. Her real job is that of an assistant to Geroge (Edward Burns), a crush that she has been carryin on for too long.
And we know it has gone far too long when Jane's sister Tess (Akerman) lands up in town. She immediately hits it off with George and before you know it, they are planning to settle down. And once again Jane being the good girl that she is, plays the perfect secretary to her boss and the perfect sister to Tess.

And amidst all this is a writer trying to move into the front pages Kevin (James Marsden) who bumps into Jane but gets off on the wrong foot.

So basically Jane is the kind of damsel in distress, leaving her life for other people and it takes a guy like Kevin to come along and show her that.

Despite all the films shortcomings (that I will be getting into), the film did still have me hooked and that too for a reason. And the sole reason, or rather the two reasons for that is the lead pair. Katherine Heigl already bowled viewers over with Knocked Up. But here the spotlight is more on just her, and she does full justice by bringing that grace and infectious charm to the character, that you start rooting for her. The other reason ofcourse is James Marsden who is soon filling up the shoes of Hugh Grant as far as these romantic flicks go. Much like Enchanted, Marsden holds your attention despite the fact that his role is one of the badly written one. There seems to be nothing great about this guy and we are left wondering...why again was him the right guy?

It is not only him that suffers from bad writing. The other man - the boss played by Edward Burns is also all wrong. We never know the reasons why Jane (Heigl) is madly in love with the character of Burns because from our eyes there is 'zero' redeeming factors.

As for the sister played by Malin Ackerman, this is the second time she fails to impress me. It is not like she is the Cameron Diaz to My Best Friends Wedding....here too (much like The Heartbreak Kid), she just ends up a disappointment (atleast on the acting front, not the other front).

Even the wit is completely missing from the writing. Surprising when you realise that it has been written by Aline who had also written The Devil Wears Prada. Here Aline has to take most of the blame for the mess...badly written male characters, lack of comedy and wit, and for stuffing the film with the cliches moments that we expect from such rom coms. The bar singing sequence is one such. Or for that matters the public declaration of love followed by thunderous applause.

Then again despite all these glaring flaws, this still remains one of those few romantic flicks where the leading lady had me captivated for most of the running time. It was nice to watch Jane struggle with her demons as she watches her sister take off with her boss. Equally interesting were her chit chat with her collegue who knows her inside out. But those moments were few and dies out pretty midway itself. Then it is just a question of how to wrap things up.

There is no doubt that director Anne Fletcher have not tried anything innovative and have dealt the cards the same way it has been done for quite some time now. But the lead actors save the day. And appeasing leads in a rom com is a rarity off late, so enjoy it while they have it on display!

MoviemagiK rates it a 3 outta 5

Hot Pix: Snake Eyes from GI JOE

Yeah, this is the look that the makers have planned out for the mysterious Snake Eyes dude for the upcoming GI JOE ...interesting....

Hot Pix: Aamir's new look for GAJINI

Finally we have Aamir unveiling the new look that he has got for his upcoming flick - the 'Gajini' project.

So for those who are still unfamiliar with the original, below is the pic of Surya from the original Gajini...and probably you will get an idea what Aamir needs to look like in the coming months...

Hot Pix: Wolf Man

It is definitely a surprise...when all the studios are happy keeping their projects top secret, Universal has already gone ahead and revealed their Wolfman months before release!

MONSTERS vs ALIENS (2009)

We have a first look at the upcoming 3D animation flick Monsters Vs Aliens from Dreamworks Animation which is slated for a 2009 release. March 27th is the proposed date at the moment.

The animation is a throwback to the monster movies of 50s as their services are used to battle the aliens that are invading earth. The film is slated to boost 3D films, as more studios are experimenting with getting this field right.

As all Dreamwork animation works goes, this too boasts of a multi starrer voice cast that includes Resse Witherspoon, Sth Rogen, Will Arnett, hugh Laurie and Kiefer sutherland.

When California girl Susan Murphy (Reese Witherspoon) is unexpectedly clobbered by a meteor full of outer space gunk on her wedding day, she mysteriously grows to 49-feet-11-inches tall and is instantly labeled a "monster" named Ginormica. The military jumps into action, and she is captured and held in a secret government compound. The world learns that the military has been quietly rounding up other monsters over the years. This ragtag group consists of the brilliant but insect-headed Dr. Cockroach, Ph.D. (Hugh Laurie); the macho half-ape, half-fish The Missing Link (Will Arnett); the gelatinous and indestructible B.O.B. (Seth Rogen); and the 350-foot grub called Insectosaurus. Their confinement time is cut short however, when a mysterious alien robot lands on Earth and begins storming the country.
As a last resort, under the guidance of General W.R. Monger (Kiefer Sutherland), on a desperate order from The President (Stephen Colbert), the motley crew of Monsters is called into action to combat the aliens and save the world from imminent destruction.

Hmm, this is how Dreamworks ran and settled for a March date instead of its original summer slot. The reason- they would have to fight it out with James Cameroons' 3d actioner AVATAR.

DRILLBIT TAYLOR (2008)

Cast: Owen Wilson, Nate Hartley, Troy Gentile, David Dorfman
Directed by Steven Brill
Written by Seth Rogen and Kristofor Brown
studio : Paramount
release date: March 21, 2008

This is the latest comedy from producer Judd Apatow, who is looking to continue his good run of 2007 (Knocked Up, Superbad) into the new year. This time however this is a more kid friendly venture with Owen Wilson roped in to play the lead.

Three kids are having a tough time at school, thanks to the school bully (Alex Frost). So they put up the money and ad for a bodyguard. However with the investment that the three have managed to cough up, all they can hire is Drillbit Taylor.

Drillbit Taylor (Owen Wilson) is a homeless chap who is planning to rob the kids and flee to Canada. That is until he bonds well with the kids and actually sticks his neck out to help them posing as a teacher. Also a fact that the English teacher also have fallen for Taylor helps his decision.

So now back to three piglets and a wolf...sorry, three nerds and that bully!

PANEL ROOM

So long as the freshmen are at center stage, this is cheerily engaging in an old-fashioned way. But when the upperclassmen and adults take over, it pretty much flunks out.

Drillbit Taylor: A Defeat for Team Apatow TIME

Drillbit, with its plethora of dull bits, will disappoint ardent fans of Wilson, Rogen or Apatow, but it might amuse a bored teen or two.
USATODAY

A junior-league Superbad, Drillbit Taylor is a just passable pubescent comedy with a modest laugh count by Apatow factory standards VARIETY

this is a big drop in quality from anything boating Apatow involvement in the past few years. - REELVIEWS

Cannot blame anyone for being fooled that this one had some potential. Afterall on paper it seems to have everything going. Judd Apatow, Owen Wilson, writers Seth Rogen and all on board. However it seems that when these dudes go soft without those adult content, they come out pretty lame. The script has been labelled a lazy piece of work, and lead man Owen is accused of being repetitive. The loops in the plots seem to be much more than the laughs, and that is bad for any comedy with Wilson in it. Looks like Wilson get back to the Stiller camp to bail himself out. This one has got a univeral thumbs down from the critics and even the box office will not be any different either.

Hot Pix: LOVE STORY 2050

A futuristic movie from Bollywood? This better be interesting! It better be...
It sees the debut of Harman Baweja alongside Priyanka Chopra, and for the moment they are keeping the new dude under waps, promotional strategy they say!
So what we have is the first teaser poster for this futurisic love story~

Moviemagik reviews RACE: Destination Nowhere!

Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Anil Kapoor, Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif and Sameera Reddy
Directed by Abbas -Mastan
Music: Pritam
MoviemagiK rates it 2.5 outta 5

This week's release, a rather hyped RACE is the latest from the duo of Abbas-Mastan. Instantly it means two things - firstly, they are a busy duo who have no time for anything original so they grab one of their DVDs from the B grade video store and make it into an A grade Bollywood flick. Secondly, the protoganist of the movie always walks the path so close to your average Bollywood villain...that for Bollywood is 'pushing the envelope''. Sad, indeed.

That is the only reason why even a over cooked script like that of Goodbye Lover ends up on your big screens as one of the biggest promises of 2008. In reality the film is as frustrating an experience that it makes you feel like you just got out of a maths classroom once the credits flash.

Why...sample this ...A related to B, gets C to join in but B together with C decides to kill A. But A goes one up and gets C to kill B instead. However B and C sticks to their plan while D comes in and hatches another plan with A.....yeah, that is how the film goes, and if this keeps you on the edge of your seats, then the RACE is on!!

Certianly I like when a movie throws a surprise or two. The smarter the surprise, the better. However what Abbas Mustan does here is goes to the extreme, gets the film as twisted as possible , with a lot of turns and U turns, and in one word...it ends up as 'much ado about nothing' (now, that was not one word, was it?).

And then again there are some who likes to have things spelt out for them, or else Bollywood would not have survived this long. So here is a more detailed plot getting the A/B/Cs changed to actual characters.

The film starts of with a lengthy introduction of the four main characters in the movie with Anil Kapoor providing the narration. One minute in, you know that the narration is straying and is going haywire. Ranvir Singh (Saif Ali Khan) and Rajeev Singh (Akshaye Khanna) are brothers with a great deal of money on hand. We are told Ranvir looks after the family business with a passion for racing and winning, and a habit of living on the edge. We are told Rajeev , the younger one is an alcoholic with no interest in the business. We also learn of Sonia, an upcoming model that Ranvir has been dating for some time, and of Sophia , the effective secretary of Ranvir's with the hots for her boss. Then we are told that Ranvir has a loyal jockey who is his biggest bet.

Those who arrives late and miss this intro however will not miss much because two minutes later, we witness how this 'loyal' jockey is not so loyal anymore, resulting in Ranvir losing a lot of money. Thus lays path for the rest of the movie for anything we are told is not to be believed, where everything is far more than what meets the eye.

As the story progresses, Ranvir gives up his love Sonia when he realises that Rajeev too has a crush on the bombshell and is ready to give up his alcoholic habits if Sonia comes into his life. The loving older brother gives up his love and plants Sonia into Rajeev's life. He is successful in getting Rajeev married to Sonia. However Rajeev stil remains the alcoholic, and Sonia comes to Rajeev sobbing reminding him how he is guilty of this broken down relationship. The truth is that the whole thing is a plan hatched by Ranvir with Sonia to bump off the older brother and claim the insurance money.

More deceit, more lies, more double crosses later , we have a murder. And that is where Inspector RD (Anil Kapoor) shows up with a bimbo of an assisant (Sameera Reddy). There is nothing fruitful' coming out from here except for bad jokes!

The film is stylishly mounted and gives the certain gloss to the rather lame script. But is the perfect example of how too many twists and turns can spoil the trip.

Even whatever suspense that the first half was building up is ruined by the second half, where Anil Kapoor's silly detective act hampers the impact. Thankfully bringing Johnny Lever for a special appearance was a welcome comic relief from Anil Kapoors' comic track. That is right ...a comic track within a comic track!

Pritam's songs are on the better side however the newly added Saif/ Katrina song sticks out like a sore thumb. Allan Amin has done a good job in the action department and so is the editing and cinematography.

Acting wise Saif Ali Khan looks the brooding part and does a fine job as long as he does not break into songs that goes against his character. Akshaye Khanna with his controlled performance throws in some credibility to the going ons however silly the situation seems to be getting. But again the Humraaz mould. Bipasha puts in a decent show, though Katrina needs to polish her acting skills to justify the big projects she is bagging. Sameera was a bimbo character that just failed to get going and Anil Kapoor was a mixed bag. Good screen presence ruined due to some lousy writing.

So why does the script go totally haywire? When the original was a dark comedy, this one tries to be extremely serious with the going ons only to end up looking silly. While Abbas Mustan and the writers think they are having mind blowing twists on paper, these gimmicks become tad predictable for present day audiences.

To give the film its due, it is pretty entertaining and would make for perfect TV viewing like most of Abbas Mastan thrillers. But with a script that smells 'B flick' all over, it is not the cinematic experience that you expect from such A grade production team and stars. However thanking heavens that it did no go the senseless Cash and Dhoom2 route. So if you want to be entertained by a bunch of people, each of whom who thinks they are the smartest thing on earth, go ahead and check them out. And by the opening it might get, the makers will justify their 'smart' approach.

Meanwhile I cannot even recommend you to the original Goodbye Lover, knowing how average that too was. Then again, you will not get a climax like the ridiculous race atop Al Ain's Jabel Hafeet mountain. What you get though is some steamy stuff from that femme-fatale thriller and not just a heroine pleading 'Touch me, Touch me'!

THE PANEL ROOM

Director duo Abbas-Mustan are in complete command this time around. Everything is so well synchronized that the end result leaves you awe-struck INDIAFM

This is a boringly shot, shabbily edited film, and it's hard to imagine anyone watching it and actually feeling the twists without laughing at them REDIFF

The perfect antidote for a lazy weekend, Race is not a great film but delivers what it promises to deliver. IBN LIVE

The true winner of the film is none other than action director-Allan Amin. He is just terrific and it’s his action and stunts that really justify the title of the film INDIAGLITZ

It is interesting how the panel room critics have found this one. While Taran goes extremely over board with praises and ga-ga, Raja Sen (Rediff) does the complete opposite. And he even goes to the extreme of spilling the beans by revealing the climax right from the word 'go'. Seems like the execs at Tips are not taking care of this chap like they do with Taran. The other two somehow puts a fair picture claiming that the film is pretty good when you take in the fact that there is nothing out there better at the moment. Now waiting for what Khalid saab will have to say at HT....

Raimi to revive Jack Ryan ?

Director Sam Raimi who managed to make two successful franchises in Evil Dead and the recent Spiderman is now being roped in by the bosses at Paramount to revive yet another franchise - the Jack Ryan one that is.

The popular CIA figure who is already responsible for four big blockbusters, think it is time for Ryan to make a return and they believe that Sam Raimi is the right man for the job. The CIA agent who was seen in the big screen in The Hunt For Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, and Sum of All Fears is a creation of writer Tom Clancy.

Clancy meanwhile is just completing his latest Jack Ryan book, but there are no assurances that Paramount will pick the same for its movie version. However insiders say that they are looking for a 2010 date to see Mr Ryan back on screen!

Which means Raimi will have to get working on this after his current flick Drag Me to Hell!

Clint Eastwood to direct GRAN TORINO

Once a powerhouse actor, now an even more powerhouse director, Clint Eastwood shall star and direct for Warner Bros / Village Roadshow Pictures in their upcoming December release GRAN TORINO. Everyone is pretty tight-lipped about this project at the moment and even they are unsure of when the shooting would begin.

The last directorial project of Eastwood was Letters from Iwo Jima.

Interestingly, there is also talks of Clint Eastwood directing a Nelson Mandela biopic titled The Human Factor!

Jodhaa Akbar : 120 crores and still counting!

UTV pictures can sigh a relief....after all the time and effort they put into this Ashutosh Gowariker epic, the money that Jodhaa Akbar is minting at the box office is pure gold indeed.
Managing to gross so far 120 Crore rupees (of which 30 crore pouring from overseas), Jodhaa Akbar is definitely a success story that has managed to make the best out of a period that hardly saw any competition.
The film has already been dubbed in several key markets and now looks to widen its reach as the film emerges a winner!

BILLOO BARBER : SRK and IRFAAN teams up!

cast: Irffan Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Lara Dutta, Om puri , Rajpal Yadav
special cameos: Kareena Kapoor and Deepika Padukone
directed by Priyadarshan
produced by Red Chillies Pvt Ltd
So that is what they are calling the much talked about South Indian movie in Bollywood - Billoo Barber. Certainly a better title is the need of the day here...come on...they are ripping a story , atleast come up with an original title?!
So what is this funny titled tale all about....it is the simple tale of a small time barber struggling to make ends meet in a village, when all of a sudden he becomes popular when a film production team lands in the village. Reason- the barber happens to be an old friend of the so-called superstar acting in the film!
The film titled Katha Parayumbol is a malayalam runaway hit of 2007. So huge was the impact of this simple success story that even Rajinikanth was instantly touched and agreed to do the Tamil version of the story - titled Kuselan.
Now Priyadarshan, the man who cannot keep his hands away from his malayalam DVD collection, has decided to put forward the same tale in Bollywood. Masterfully, he has managed to coax SRK to get involved in it giving the film a whole new dimension. In fact SRK too fell for the simplicity of the film, that he has agreed not only to produce the movie but also to retain the soul and essence of the original.
So now this version will have Irfan Khan playing the small time barber while Shahrukh Khan will play the superstar that he is. So while SRK shall be shown prancing around with top heroines as part of the film shooting, the lady opposite Irfan is yet to be decided. And Priyan knows that it is a decision he will have to take wisely!
So wrap up...we have SRK producing this Priyadarshan directorial venture, the screenplay of the original will be adapted into Hindi by Mushtaque sheikh and Manisha Korde, with lyrics from Gulzar.
Red Chillies Entertainment - you have a good project on hand....Priyadarshan.....do not go and mess this one up! Atleast with the title, seems like they have...
And Priyan, please acknowledge Sreenivasan's contribution to this rather than disguising this as a take on the Krishna -Sudama tale!
Meanwhile lead man Irfan Khan is a very excited man thanks to the wonderful character that he gets to play. source: Mumbai Mirror. Who wouldn't be when you have SRK playing second fiddle to this barber in town!

Priyadarshan to team up with Ajay Devgan?

Now with the help of producer friend Kumar Rangat, Ajay Devgan is certainly trying his hand at everything different possible.
Probably the reason why the two has decided to get Priyadarshan to direct a subject for them. And knowing Priyan, he will already have a surefire script (read: A south indian film as source material) ready on his hands.
So which means Priyan might start shooting the film before the next full moon!
However what is interesting is that there are chances that some more names might figure in the final list which includes Kajol and Abhishek Bachchan.
So guys...those are your clues...try to guess which Malayalam movie is Priyan remaking now?

Sajid Khan's next...Gimme More, Baby!

No, no that is not the title nor is his next anything to do remotely with his (how the hell? successful) Heyy Babyy.
But earlier Tv anchor now a big shot director, Sajid Khan has decided to cast Akshay Kumar and Riteish Deshmukh for his next comedy which will not be going to the floors anytime before Christmas.
This multistarrer will have more heroes and leading ladies included in the package. And with Sajid Khan, throw in a few cameos as well. But for the moment, Deepika Padukone has been finalised as one of the three leading ladies.
Which brings me back to the basic question....how would YOU rate Sajid Khan's not much talked about blockbuster - Heyy Baby??

Santosh Sivan makes his International debut!

Acclaimed cinematographer Santosh Sivan have all the reasons to be an excited man as his English debut film Before The Rains is set to make its way into the theatres in the US, thanks to the deal between Merchant Ivory Production and Roadside Attractions.

The movie is set in Southern India in the late 1930s and tells the story of a man who is torn between the two worlds and the choices he is left to make. The man is T.K Neelan (Rahul Bose) a young Indian who forms the link between the land, the villagers and his foreign boss, spice baron Henry Moore (Linus Roache). However things turn ugly in the village as news spreads that Moore is having an affair with his maid Sanjani (Nandita Das). This is where TK gets torn between his orthodox past and his progressive future. The film takes a look at the choices and decisions the man makes.

The film was earlier premiered at several film festivals and now looks all set to break out to more audiences.

Vishal Bhardwaj to do a ROMEO & JULIET ?

Vishal seems to enjoy brining the Bard to Bollywood, and that does not like changing any time soon if the latest news is to be believed.
For now after successfully adapting Shakespear plays like Macbeth (Maqbool) and Othello (Omkara), music director turned film director Vishal Bhardwaj is now looking forward to adapt the most popular of Shakespearan works - Romeo and Juliet.
This too will be based in modern times and Shahid Kapoor seems to be the most probably choice for Romeo. However it is Juliet that the director is still on the lookout. Surprisingly, Priyanka's name is being thrown around.
If I hear more on this , you shall know!

Tales from the Counter: Mar 14 2008 (Hollywood )

The verdict is clear. The critics have loved the latest Dr Seuss adaptation to the big screen, Horton Hears a Who!. The same people who barely managed to sit through earlier live action flicks like The Grinch Who Stole Christmas and The Cat in a Hat reaffirms their faith in Dr Seuss and their writing. Atleast this time around they are more friendly to the animated version. Dr Seuss Horton Hears a Who afterall boasts the voice talents of some of the biggest names in comedy - Jim Carrey, Steve Carrell, Seth Rogen , Will Arnett.

It also easily goes up the ladder as one of the most well received films of this year.

However that means doom for the other competition in the big screens.

NEVER BACK DOWN a college beat em up tale fails to make any inroads and looks to be one silly outing. Initial reports says that despite what you say, this one will have to back down from the competition.

DOOMSDAY was another film that was having some buzz, purely for the sole reason that the director's last film Descent was one worthy flick. However Doomsday is a zombie tale that hardly has a bone of novelty in it. With no critic screening, the makers have delayed the word coming out...for the verdict is clear..Its DOOM for this.

DR SUESS' HORTON HEARS A WHO

Cast: Jim Carrey, Steve Carrell, Seth Rogen

Directed by Jimmy Hayward/ Steve Mortino

Studio: 20th Century Fox

Dr Seuss now comes in the 3D animated form. After appearing in traditional animation styles early on, we all saw Jim Carrey comes out with a live version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Mike Myers doing A Cat in the HAt for you. Dr Seuss now comes in the latest form - as Dr Suess' Horton Hears A Who....brought to you by BlueSky Animations - the same studio that brought Ice Age!

It tells the tale of a planet of people who land up on earth...the problem is that this planet is no larger than a speck. However the voices of this entire population comes to the ears of the elephant Horton (Jim Carrey). Horton soon realises that the speck is the land of Who-ville and it is upto him to protect this city and find a safe place for the people of Who-ville. For this he joins hands with the mayor of Whoville (Steve Carrell).

While Horton's notion of the city of Whoville is scoffed by the other animals in the Jungle of Nool, the Mayor too faces similar ridicule when he informs his people about the dangers of extinction that the city is facing. But together against all odds, they fight for the beliefs.

The story, written almost 50 years back, is still a fantastic piece of fable for the fickle world that we live today. And the USP of the film certainly is the wonderful voice casting that boasts of some of the big names in the comedy bracker - Jim Carrey, Steve Carrell, Seth Rogen all coming together. However unlike most of the star studded animation films that we see, this one promises to make use of their abilities than just mere star power.

PANEL ROOM

gives it a 4/5

IT seems that the film has really hit bullseye retaining the charm of the works of Dr Seuss without resorting to pop culture gimmick which several of the post Shrek animation flicks suffer heavily from. From the bunch of reviews that we are getting, this one is already on the list of the top movies of this year .

The look of the story is an undeniable treat, and the message it weaves is both funny and sweet. USA TODAY

while it lacks enchantment it retains just enough of the original’s charm to make good family fare. - ONE GUYS OPINION

A treat for the eye, an epic event/ This film is delightful, one hundred percent - TIME

On the personal front, Saravan also stands to lose his love interest Mythili (Gopika) who is a successful actress but is seen nothing more than a golden goose by her family members. THE PANEL ROOM

Like all malayalam remakes, this one too looks like one that might fail in comparison to the original. The most important one being the character of a overnight superstar which was a rather comical one in the original, taking a more filmi villain shades in this version.

the film has been a replica of Malayalam version ‘Udhayananu Tharam’ and so there is nothing you can appreciate about the director’s cut in the flick - Cinefundas

Overall the movie is a hilarious and honest critique on some shades of the tinsel town.Worth watching. - Indiaglitz

On the whole Vellithira is not a faithful remake and therein lies its pitfalls, but at the same time it is a breezy fun movie - SIFY

Sila Nerangalil (Tamil, 2008)

Cast: Vincent Ashokan, Navya Nair, Vineeth
Directed by Jayaraj
Music by Srikanth Deva

Sila Nerangalil sees the debut of Jayaraj into Tamil movies. Jayaraj who was once considered a promising director suddenly sticks out like a man who has no clue what he is upto. His recent malayalam films have all turned out to be duds. But if he thinks the Tamil audiences might make better audiences, we cannot advise otherwise.

But he choses a reincarnation theme flick and wraps it as a thriller for his first Tamil venture, with a basic storyline that sounds a lot close to the back story of the classic Manichitratazhu.

The film also sees the transition of Vincent Ashokan from villain to a leading man while Malayalam actress Navya Nair still tries to make a mark in Tamil cinema.

Navya Nair lands up at an missionary home in Udayagiri with no memory of her past. All we know is that the girl is a troubled one with strange visions of her own murder. Meanwhile the person trying to cure her, Jo (Vincent Asokan) finally gets the help of a noted psychiatrist Dr Gopalakrishan (Raghuvaran) and together they try to plunge into the deep pysche of this patient.

What they realise though is that this girl is a reincarnation of Thamarai who was brutally murdered forty years back, for which her husband was sentenced to death. And further twist when they realise that Jo too is a reincarnation of the husband Chidambaram.

Now the past and the present merge as they try to hunt down the real killer.

THE PANEL ROOM

rates it 3 outta 5

Al lthe following reviews give the basic idea is that the makers have managed to come out with something decent enough despite a loop bound script. Some reviewers are as confused as the characters too I guess. While they have praises for the movie, they eventually rate the movie too low.
Both Navya Nair and Vincent Ashokan seems to be getting fair reviews for their work though it is Raghuvaran who seems to have walked away with the best deal. For a change, no one is panning him for being trademark feature.

On the whole Silanerangalil is nothing to scream about. At the same time if you have some time to kill, it's worth a look. - SIFY

Clever in parts and lame in some, Sila Nerangalil plays hide and seek with logic and evokes a déjà vu feeling of the late 80s Tamil cinema - Behindwoods 2.5/5

Jim Carrey to star in Pierre Pierre!

So now after all the Juno hype is getting settled down, it is time for director Jason Reitman to look beyond. And it looks like he will settle in for PIERRE PIERRE.

One of the hottest scripts in the market penned by Edwin Cannistraci and Frederick Seton, was snatched up by Fox Atomic for $1 million. And though the budget is only pegged at 13 million dollars, they have roped in Jim Carrey to star in the film.

The comedy is about self-indulgent, lazy, French nihilist who is transporting a stolen Mona Lisa from Paris to London." Throughout the journey he comes to love his home country again.

So will this one million dollar script get Carrey the one million buck role?

Hot Pix: FRUIT AND NUTS

Bollywood Hungama has unleashed a whole load of new stills from the upcoming comedy Fruit and Nuts.

The comedy will see the usually insufferable Cyrus Broacha from the television screens to the big screen. The good thing about that is you have a choice of whether to catch him in action or not, and more importantly, Cyrus will have a script to stick onto. To me, that is as good as a leash to the dog.

Also it boasts of a great cast that includes Boman Irani and Mahesh Manjrekar. Dia Mirza plays the lead lady in this zany comedy!
