Bharat Gopi passes away, but shall not fade away!

I always knew him as Bharat Gopi. In a land of superstars like Mammooty and Mohanlal, I always knew him as an actor. An actor par excellence, who with every minute expression could bring out emotions far deep within you. And today I know that he is no more. For Bharat Gopi or Gopiyettan as the film circle knows him, has passed away at the age of 71.

Bharat Gopi secured the national award for best actor in 1977 for Kodiyettam. From there on 'Bharat'got affixed to his name Gopi, and so for me he was always Bharat Gopi. His performances in films like Yavanika, Katuthe Kilikoodu, Aadaminte Vaariyellu still is fresh in my mind inspite having watched the movies ages ago.

Things ofcourse never looked so rosy for this actor ever since his paralytic attack some twenty years back and ever since then, we all knew that this was coming. However he did recover a lot to work with the current generation in films like Wanted, Vasenthiyum Lakmiyum Pinne Njaanum and the latest Rasathantram and Nivedhyam.

And at times like this, one learns what a great talent he truly was. We get a chance to look at his achievements from a more meaninful perspective. Not many know that besides acting, he has also won National awards for his writing (his book Abhinayam Anubhavam) while his productional venture Padheyam won several awards and laurels.

He will be surely missed and yet one more from that golden era of Malayalam cinema has left us.
